Thoughts on Gentrification

Writer's picture: Brandy Del RioBrandy Del Rio

My mother took a trip to Puerto Rico with some cousins. I would've gone with her, however I'm not cleared to travel internationally for a year, so I had to stay home. I always thought my mother was pretty bad when it came to immersing herself in culture. But my cousins really do take the cake. She came back with tales of them literally not engaging with the local cuisine, going as far as ordering from Pizza Hut and other chain restaurants that emigrated to the island. They are like the tourists that have been moving to Mexico and don’t immerse themselves in the culture or even attempt to learn the customs. This is gentrification and just not acceptable.

I’ve been seeing lots of videos in recent weeks about the people who go and settle in another country and literally complain about the customs and never think about how long those traditions have been in place. They go as far as to report to local authorities because they are just bothered by the mere presence in existence of these things. I’ve seen videos of irate residents of those areas voicing their concerns about the people who never originated from that space.

Many of these people don’t even have any cultural ties to the land. If anything, they are simply trying to essentially colonize these places or bring their own lack of experience with the culture to the area. I do have to remember that the pressure to assimilate is very embedded in the psyche of most of my family. It’s not to shame anybody. It’s just a reality of being of Mexican descent in a country that very much demonizes immigrants. And that’s the sad part.
